GlossaryPlain definitions for non-technical founders

Fractional CTO.

A fractional CTO is an experienced technical leader who works part-time, giving you senior technical direction without the cost of a full-time hire. It is a good fit when you have a team or vendors to steer and need someone to set the direction and make the hard calls. What it does not do is build the software. For a founder whose real gap is execution, that distinction decides whether it is the right spend.

01 / What is a fractional CTO

It is senior technical leadership, part-time, for companies that are not ready for or do not need a full-time one.

The value is judgment. A good fractional CTO sets direction, makes build-versus-buy calls, vets vendors and hires, and keeps the technology pointed at the business. For a founder facing decisions they cannot evaluate alone, that experience is real and worth paying for.

The limit is also clear. A fractional CTO leads, they do not build. If your problem is that you have no team and no software, a part-time leader gives you a plan but no one to execute it. That is where a build team comes in. Knowing which gap you actually have, direction or delivery, is the whole decision.

02 / When each one fits

  • + A fractional CTO fits when you have a team or vendors to steer
  • + It fits when your gap is direction and decisions, not hands on keyboards
  • + A build team fits when your gap is shipping the software itself
  • + An embedded engineering team fits when you need both, ongoing

Compare the two in fractional CTO vs a development agency, or see the embedded engineering team. Related: technical debt and MVP. Start a conversation.

03 / Common questions

What does a fractional CTO actually do?

They set technical direction, weigh build-versus-buy decisions, vet vendors and hires, and keep the technology aligned with the business. It is leadership and judgment, part-time. What they generally do not do is build the product themselves, which is a separate job.

Do I need a fractional CTO or a build team?

Different problems. A fractional CTO gives you direction when you have a team or vendors to steer. A build team ships the software. Many founders need the building done more than the supervising. Fractional CTO vs a development agency walks through the choice.

Can one fit a founder with no tech team at all?

Sometimes, for direction. But if you have no team, advice alone does not produce software. A fixed-price build with day-one ownership often fits better, because it delivers the thing and leaves you owning it, rather than leaving you with a plan and no one to execute it.
